Just Plain Gloves


A good pair of gloves—unfussy, warm, go-with-anything gloves—is essential. Pick your favourite colour and cast on these basic hand warmers. Knit them as written, or use as a blank canvas to express your own creativity with your favourite colourwork.

With sizes from Toddler’s up to Men’s Large in three yarn weights (Bulky, Aran/Heavy Worsted, and Fingering) and instructions for a knit liner in fingering weight included, you and your loved ones will have the toastiest, classiest hands around. Worked cuff-down in the round for minimal seaming and finishing.

Bulky & Aran/Heavy Worsted Weights:

  1. Toddler/Child (5”-6”/7.5-15 cm hand circumference)

SKILLS YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS PATTERN: Knit, purl, make a gauge swatch in Stockinette Stitch.

Note: Instead of double-pointed needles, you could use 2 short sets of circular needles. See “Notes” for links on how to knit with either double pointed needles or two circular needles. Also, yarn weight numbers should be used as a guide—check yardages for more accuracy.

BULKY WEIGHT: Set of four 5.0 mm (US ­­8) double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
1, 1, 2, 2 x 100 g/125.0 m (3.52 oz/137.0 yds) balls bulky-weight yarn (I used Knit Picks’ Wool of the Andes Superwash Bulky)
Approximate yardage requirements: 83, 113, 147, 185 yds/75, 103, 134, 169 m.

ARAN WEIGHT: 4.0 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
1, 2, 2, 2 x 50 g/99.0 m (1.75 oz/110 yds) balls aran-weight (heavy worsted) yarn (I used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash).
Approximate yardage requirements: 61, 139, 181, 218 yds/55, 125, 163, 195 m.

FINGERING WEIGHT: 3.25 mm (US 3) double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
SHELL: 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2 x 50 g/207.9 m (1.75 oz./231 yds) balls fingering-weight yarn (I used Knit Picks Stroll Tweed).
Approximate yardage requirements: 65, 110, 159, 204, 234, 260 yds/59, 99, 143, 183, 211, 234 m.
LINER: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 x 50g/207.9 m (1.75 oz/231 yds) balls fingering-weight sock yarn (I used Knit Picks Stroll Tweed).
Approximate yardage requirements: 47, 70, 130, 153, 174, 218 yds/42, 62, 117, 137, 157, 195 m.

ALL: yarn needle; scrap of yarn for marker.

Printing Suggestion: If you choose to print this pattern, it will be easiest to follow if you print it double-sided and staple it down the left side in booklet form. Also, choose the "Print Actual Size" option in your print dialogue box to make sure the sewing patterns are printed accurately.
