Rebecca Mitchell folded her husband’s polo shirt, still warm from the dryer, and held it against her chest with a sigh. She inhaled the clean laundry scent mixed with traces of Ted’s cologne that always seemed to linger on his clothes. Twenty-three years of marriage, and that smell still made her heart skip a beat, even when she was upset with him. Which she definitely was right now.
“You’re sure you can’t postpone the trip?” She placed the shirt in his suitcase, not meeting his eyes. “Even for a few days?” She kept the next thought to herself—until after our anniversary?
“Birdie . . .” Ted looked up from packing his laptop, his voice gentle. “The Vancouver team needs me there tomorrow morning. You know how critical this project launch is.”
Rebecca smoothed nonexistent wrinkles from the shirt. Of course she knew. The project was all he’d talked about for months. What he didn’t seem to know was how much she needed him here.
