Ancient of Days [Songwriter Demo]: Christmas Pop/Rock

Songwriter's Demo by Talena Winters: Christmas worship song "Ancient of Days".

β€œAncient of Days” is a Christmas pop or rock worship song about the wonder of the all-powerful Creator choosing to come as a fragile, vulnerable infant.

Driven by a Latin-inspired groove, it sits in a comfortable one-octave range and can be sung by male or female lead vocalists. I’ve even arranged it for SAT choirβ€”with an intro of β€œO Come, O Come, Emmanuel”—and seen amateur singers pull it off beautifully.

The minor key, strong melodic hook, and compelling worship message make β€œAncient of Days” a natural show-stopper for Christmas services, concerts, or special features.

These demos are songwriter recordings intended to highlight the song’s potential for artists, worship leaders, and producers.

This underlying song is available for recording and licensing for:

  • Artist and worship releases (albums, EPs, singles)

  • Church Christmas services and special events

  • Faith-based media, film, and sync opportunities

Sheet music for the choir arrangement is also available.

Behind the Song

I wrote this song while I was in college, to remind myself and others that the Jesus we talk about each Christmas isn’t just a cute little baby, but the Saviour of mankind and the very One who spoke mankind into being. He gave everything for us, and we owe him everything.

I had so much fun working with the Latin groove of this song, inspired by some music I’d fallen in love with in my jazz-focused college courses. It’s been performed publicly twiceβ€”once for a Christmas service by talented church musicians, and later, by an amateur adult choir I was directing. A live recording of the former was also released as a demo in 2007.

Lyrics

What can I bring? What can I give

To the infant God who gave me breath?

If I could give Him anything

My heart and soul is what I’d bring.

And I will give this Child my life

And I will serve Him until death

I give to Him all my praise

This precious Babeβ€”Ancient of Days.

The Son of God, I see You here

In a lowly manger full of hay.

The angel hosts sang out the news:

β€œThe salvation of man is born today!”

And even now I fall to my knees

And I worship the One and Only God

For I know I have been brought to a holy place

This newborn Babeβ€”Ancient of Days

For Who has gone up to heaven and come down?

Who holds the wind and water in His hand?

For the same God who created everything I see

Today has Himself become a man.

No one can know the price He paid

He left behind His heav’nly place

To save my life He lived and died

And now I gratefully seek His face.

And even now I fall to my knees

And I worship the One and Only God

For I know I have been brought to a holy place

This newborn Babeβ€”Ancient of Days

This precious newborn Babeβ€”Ancient of Days!
