Behind the Song

When I was twenty years old, I was going through some rather difficult and turbulent moments (as one does). While weeping my heart out to God on the floor my room in a dorm room while volunteering in India, feeling abandoned and lost, I heard a near-physical voice from him for the first time in my life. He gave me two words: Trust and Obey.

That trip changed the course of my life.

Ever since, the hymn “Trust and Obey” has held a special place in my heart. While serving as a worship leader, I created a modern arrangement, complete with a new bridge I wrote and composed and, in this version, an unusual rhythmic pattern on the verses to keep things interesting.

To this day, this is one of my favourite hymns… even though I feel as though I’m still relearning the execution of that simple directive to “trust and obey” on a regular basis.
